Garden gnomes come from German folklore, where gnomes were small earth spirits said to guard treasure and help gardens grow. The first ceramic garden gnomes were made in Germany in the 1800s, and they have been popping up in yards ever since. Gnomes are usually drawn with long white beards, pointy red hats and boots.
