Hanukkah, sometimes spelled Chanukah, is the Jewish festival of lights. It lasts eight nights and begins on the twenty-fifth day of the Hebrew month of Kislev, which usually falls in late November or December. The holiday remembers the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem more than two thousand years ago and the story of a small jar of oil that lasted eight days. Each night, families light one more candle on a menorah called a hanukkiah, using a helper candle called the shamash. Foods fried in oil, like potato latkes and jelly donuts called sufganiyot, are traditional, and kids play dreidel for chocolate coins called gelt. This collection pairs those traditions with cozy animal friends. A polar bear serves latkes, a fox holds a jelly donut, a lion cub carries a jar of gelt and a hedgehog sips cocoa beside a dreidel. There are pages with a menorah, a dreidel, gelt and a floral Star of David dreidel. Blue, white, silver and gold are popular Hanukkah colors.
