Halloween grew out of Samhain, an old Celtic festival that marked the end of harvest and the start of the dark half of the year. Carving lanterns came later: people in Ireland and Scotland once carved turnips, and pumpkins took over in North America because they were bigger and easier to hollow out. This collection leans on the friendly side of the season. You will find black cats perched on fence posts under a full moon, bats hanging from branches, a bubbling cauldron with stars rising out of it, candy corn stacked into a tower, and plenty of jack-o-lanterns with candles glowing inside. Nothing here is gory or scary enough to keep a preschooler up at night. Orange, purple, black and lime green make a classic palette, but a pink pumpkin or a teal cauldron looks great on a fridge too. Bigger shapes suit kids around ages 3 to 6, while the moonlit fence scenes and the pumpkin mandala give older kids more small spaces to fill.
